The coronavirus pandemic has put countless lives at risk and undermined 25 years of global social and economic progress. But it's also spurred unprecedented international action and collaboration to slow the spread of the virus, and pave the way to vaccine access for all. Brad Tytel '18, Senior Program Officer - COVID-19 Response Policy at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will share why he's hopeful that we're making progress despite all the pitfalls, and how to ensure equity in the global response one video conference at a time.

On August 1, 1946, the streets of Athens, Tennessee exploded into open warfare as a group of WWII veterans took on and defeated a corrupt political machine that had terrorized their community for a decade. Now what? The late war was itself a consequence of a failure to make a lasting peace. Could the people of McMinn County do better? My book THE FIGHTING BUNCH, out November 3rd, explores how this community was blasted apart and came back together, and what lessons there might be for today.

Dementia and Alzheimers costs more than cancer, heart disease and stroke put together in the UK and many other developed countries. So financially we need to fix it, or save up for it, or find out where there is a business opportunity, while doing good. I’d like to talk about Ageing and preparation for the future challenges of dementia and Alzheimer’s. Although people are assailed with the appalling numbers of older people who have died as a result of Covid, especially in care homes, and governments are dismayed at the complete and long standing failure of any the pharmaceutical industry to come up with any viable treatments for dementia, I choose hope for the future because there is a lot that we can already do to delay or avoid dementia and people like those in BAP should be at the front of this movement.

According to Habermas (1984) opening communicative space is about communicating and learning with others to agree understandings of the world, without resorting to power as a means of persuasion. This was the underpinning of my action research Masters looking at the systemic conditions that hold Black mental health inequality in place, which I finished in April 2020. It was a two year journey which of course reinforced a lot of what I already knew but also shed light on some things that I didn’t know - the connectivity between my race, my pain and my power and the art of “wayfinding” in a complex world.

In this session, I want to make the case for reading books, and in particular novels. One way or another I’ve spent my whole life either reading, writing, making, fixing, publishing or selling books. So, don’t expect a balanced assessment: I’m on the obsessive side of passionate when it comes to reading. Over the course of a relaxed hour, what I hope to show you – even, and perhaps especially, those of you who don’t regularly read for pleasure - is just why reading matters and why reading just a little more each day will make you a smarter, happier person.
